Michaela Helliwell
Stained Glass, Glass Painting
Artist Statement
My work as a glass painter is rooted in tradition and a deep appreciation for reclaimed antique materials. I’m drawn to old glass for the quiet stories it holds—its weathered texture, imperfections, and history. Using centuries-old painting techniques, I reimagine these fragments into functional stained glass pieces to beautify modern contemporary spaces. Each panel is both a nod to the past and a conversation with the present—where beauty, utility, and craft intersect.
I see glass interacting with light, time, and space. Through restoration and original work, I explore how line, colour, and form can shape the way we experience light and nature. My practice is a continuation of a nearly thousand-year-old tradition, influenced by the craftsmanship of medieval windows and the enduring spirit of makers who came before me.
Artist Bio
Michaela is a traditional glass painter dedicated to preserving and advancing techniques that have been passed down for nearly a millennium. Rooted in the deep history of stained glass, her work is a continuation of over 900 years of craftsmanship in painting on glass and manipulating light through colour and form.
She has studied under master glass painters from around the world, both remotely and in person. Her journey began with the published teachings of Williams & Byrne (UK), and later she studied with them directly during an intensive program at Bryn Athyn College. Michaela returned to Bryn Athyn in 2017 to continue her training under renowned glass artist J. Kenneth Leap.
Much of Michaela's education has been hands-on and research-based, studying medieval English stained glass windows to understand the nuance of line work, brush technique, and the ancient mastery of light control. She often travels throughout North America to observe historic stained glass in museum collections and has plans to expand her study to the UK.
In addition to her work in traditional painting, Michaela restores antique stained glass windows from both the UK and Toronto, deepening her understanding of historical methods through practical application. Her background in graphic design supports her art practice with strong foundations in composition, balance, and visual storytelling.
Michaela’s work bridges the past and present—honoring the traditions of the old masters while continuing to explore the expressive potential of painted glass in the modern era.
